Attention deficit disorder (ADD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can make life difficult, whether you are an adult or child.
Adults who find themselves constantly distracted, disorganized, forgetful, late, and/or overwhelmed by responsibilities, and who have been this way since childhood, may have adult ADD/ADHD.
Children who have extreme difficulty paying attention, or concentrating, are overly impulsive, or hyperactive may have attention deficit disorder.
ADD/ADHD can have a major impact on your ability to learn, your relationships, and your career.
Because everyone shows signs of these behaviors at one time or another, the guidelines for determining whether a person has ADHD are very specific. A thorough assessment and proper diagnosis of ADD/ADHD are critical to getting the best and most effective treatment. In addition to a counselor with experience in treating ADD and ADHD, other health professionals may need to be involved to rule out, or to treat, other co-existing disorders. A number of different tools, such as, a checklist of symptoms, answers to questions about past and present problems, or a medical exam, may be used to rule out other causes for symptoms of ADD/ADHD.
